Gyproc volunteers for Al Noor - Corporate Day 2016

A team of twenty company employees got Gyproc’s 350 Charity Initiative off to a great start on 18th February  when they turned up at Al Noor’s Dubai Training Centre to support the charity’s Corporate Day.

Al Noor Corporate Day

Launched in October 2015 as part of a programme of events and activities to celebrate parent group Saint Gobain’s 350th Anniversary, the Gyproc initiative aims at encouraging and supporting its employees in volunteering 350 days hours of their work time to support a number of local charities, including Al Noor, Dubai Cares and Gulf for Good.

Al Noor’s Corporate Day provided the first major opportunity for the team to make good on their promises, and they jumped at the chance.

Al Noor was set up to help students with special needs, including those with Autism, Cerebral Palsy and Down’s syndrome to realise their potential and integrate successfully into the local community. Activities at the Dubai Centre are therefore aimed at providing support in day-to-day life skills as well vocational training to develop future employment opportunities.

Under the guidance of classroom teachers, the Gyproc volunteers worked closely with the students in a range of different classes and interactive one-to-one sessions in subjects such as music, computer skills, sports, painting, reading and writing, as well as assisting with some of the Centre’s vocational training units, where students can learn skills like Screen Printing, Baking, Carpentry and Sewing.

Following the classroom sessions the volunteers were invited to tour the Centre’s facilities – including the Smiles n’ stuff shop where they were able to buy a selection of beautiful items produced by the Centre’s students, as a memento of their day.

Each of the volunteers had their own story to tell about the experience, but all agreed that the few hours working alongside the students had been fun, very rewarding and had left a lasting impression.

Gyproc’s 350 Charity Committee who arranged the visit said “We are really grateful to the company for giving us this opportunity – We would never have imagined that volunteering could be so rewarding. We are now all fired up and looking forward to more engagements with Al Noor and the other local charities who rely so much on volunteers to support their work with young people and others with special challenges.”
