Al Mafraq Hospital nominated for International competition
The US$870 million expansion of the Mafraq Hospital has been nominated for a major international competition. The project has been accepted in the Segment Solution category of the Saint-Gobain International Trophy, and will be judged against a raft of other international entries at a special event in Berlin, in June.
The extensive use of Gyproc drylining systems on the US$870 million extension to Abu Dhabi’s Al Mafraq Hospital, has resulted in the project being nominated as the Middle East’s entry in the prestigious Saint-Gobain International Trophy competition.
The project is one of 87 entries from 33 countries that will be judged and awarded at a special event in Berlin, in June.
The drywall package for the project was originally quoted by a US manufacturer to American specifications. It was then switched following detailed work by the Gyproc Technical Team, who were able to offer a complete high performance internal lining and partitions specification that met and surpassed all of the performance requirements, whilst offering significant logistical and environmental benefits for the project.
A range of partition, lining and ceiling systems, including GypWall CLASSIC, GypWall QUIET, GypWall QUIET SF, GypLyner and Gyproc MF, together involving in excess of 1 million linear metres of Gypframe metal profiles and 800,000m2 of Gyproc plasterboards, were installed throughout the complex to meet demanding standards of fire, impact, acoustic and moisture resistance performance.
To bring sub-contractors, Al Massa and International Décor, up to speed with the high performance systems and ensure optimum installation standards, Gyproc’s Training Team carried out more than 2000 man hours of on-site training for over 100 of the 325-strong team of installers and site supervisors involved in the high profile project.
One of the largest projects undertaken in the UAE, the expansion, which includes four 10-12 story patient towers, two royal suites and 32 VVIP suites, will effectively triple the number of treatment rooms and accommodate the expected growth in demand for healthcare in the city until post-2018.
Originally established in 1998, and now recognised as one of the leading global events in its field, the Saint-Gobain International Trophy competition seeks to recognise craftsmanship and skill in plastering and plasterboard systems, with entries judged on the basis of quality, skill and innovation. The event takes place every two years, with 2014 being the 9th Trophy competition.
