Environment-friendly Gyproc systems for world’s first carbon-neutral City

Green Label certified lightweight metal systems from Gyproc Middle East have been chosen for the new Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, the first project to be completed at Abu Dhabi’s carbon neutral, zero waste Masdar City – the first city of its kind in the world.
The Gyproc metal frame systems, which include GypWall CLASSIC partitions, GypWall QUIET separating walls – lined with high impact resistant Gyproc DuraLine board for a robust finish, Gyproc ShaftWall and Gyproc MF ceilings, were chosen to replace blockwork, which was not considered to be a sufficiently environmentally sustainable solution for the high profile project.
As well as meeting the very demanding environmental credentials, the Gyproc systems were faster, lighter and easier to use than the blockwork alternative. They provided a more efficient building system, satisfying a range of demands, from shafts and risers requiring 120 minutes fire resistance, to curved partitions, up to 5.5 metres high, that provided a stunning feature around the reception areas at the research-oriented University, which is focused on alternative energy, sustainability, and the environment.
The Gyproc systems achieve high levels of sustainability largely due to their lining of Gyproc plasterboards, which are manufactured locally at Gyproc Middle East’s new $60-million Abu Dhabi plant. The Gyproc plasterboards have a very high recycled content, and are 100% recyclable into the process, thus satisfying the City’s zero waste criteria.
The unusual curved shapes, demanding performance requirements and MEP-related challenges in the unique building placed extra demands on dry lining sub-contractors, Al Ahmadiah and PF Emirates, who received on-site training from the Gyproc technical team on the correct and most efficient installation techniques for the high performance Gyproc systems.
